My Story

My name is Jim Bulleit, and I am a songwriter.   It’s only been a little while now that I would say that.  For a long time, I would introduce myself as a teacher—I taught high school English in the public schools here in Virginia Beach for thirty years; or a parent—I am the proud father of two sons, both gifted musicians, both fine young men; or a runner, or a vegetarian, or an ex-hippie—all identities I still would own but which no longer seem to define me.  Now I am a songwriter.  I have always written songs on occasion—when I was in love, when I was experiencing grief—but the responsibilities of those other identities tended to crowd out writing on any kind of consistent basis.  Until now.  My sons are both grown and launched into their own adult lives—one an aspiring musician in Nashville, one here in VB training to be a physical therapist and being the father of a beautiful little boy.  I am now retired from the public schools and working part time teaching writing at the local community college, and I am finally able to follow my muse and write and perform my songs whenever I want to.  Since my retirement, I’ve recorded one full-length CD of original acoustic songs, Prufrocks Blues, and an EP of plugged-in electric music with my side project, B-Sides, called Existential Pondering.   And I’ve written about 60 more songs, many of which appear on this website in demo form.  I’ve performed regularly at local bars and restaurants, hosted my own Songwriter Open Mic series at a local coffee house, and been featured on television (see the first link below), radio (the second and third links), and the newspaper (the fourth link).

My songs have received praise for their honesty and their poetic lyrics, which makes me both proud and deeply grateful to the Muse, who seems to visit me more often these days.
